Sick

Hello out there,

I’ve been sick for the last four days and wasn’t able to write my story this week.

I know there’s a lot of you that look forward to it and I’m sorry but life sucks sometimes.

If you would like to read something a friend gave me a bit of Dark Offerings fan fiction. Which I posted instead of this week’s chapter.

Have a look.

I appreciate your patience while I recover.

Talking Offerings Chapter 3

Hello out there,

Welcome to the third episode of Talking Offerings! This series offers a deeper look into the weekly story Dark Offerings. I provide my insights as the writer and analyze the story so far.

Dark Offerings is like the Dark Souls of Augmented Reality MMOs. Even the lowest of creatures can still kill you especially if you’re being ganged up on.

If you don’t currently read Dark Offerings feel free to use this link and read it! It’s free.

Chapter 3.

For all my MMORPG geeks out there (One of us.) I want to be clear. The abilities in this game, including the way skills, are trained, is similar to the system in Asherons Call.

For those that don’t understand or haven’t heard of AC (SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!) the way it works is your abilities go up by using them and you also get extra experience that you can choose to use on whatever you want.

I’m a huge fan of that game and have spent endless hours playing it. That being said like I stated in the intro, it’s also a Dark Souls-like.

I am a pantser. That means that I don’t plot stories out. However, in this story, I decided to take my time and plan a little bit. Like I said before in a few of my blogs I tend to take small goals and work my way toward them. It’s the same with this one just a little bit better.

I even did a bit of brainstorming and came up with the idea that the sword would not be normal. In the next few chapters, you’ll see what I mean.

Molly and Inethiel are still on shaky ground relationship-wise. On top of that Inethiel is trying to deal with the fact that she, in the last Chapter, experienced something that shouldn’t be possible.

I introduced an exhaustion mechanic to the game. Undead aren’t all-powerful. They are however a product of magic and are not the bite me and instant pandemic variety.

Shamblers are supposed to be the slow-moving variety of zombies. Players can train the slow-moving part out of the character but they will never be as fast as an elf or normal human who’s spent just as many points in the same stat.

The new character introduced in this one is Victor. Molly and he go way back and he is one of the people in town that enjoys role-playing. I still haven’t figured out what his real-life shop is going to be but I’m sure it’ll all come together later on.

The sword is going to be a very important piece of the story. This is one of the things I’ve thought a lot about so I hope you like it.

I also introduced a very basic magic system in this one. Admittedly, I haven’t spent too much time fleshing the system out. Most video games have a generic system where each character has mana and that mana is expended when a spell is cast.

I’m not sure if that’s the direction I want to go with or not but it’s probably what I’ll use. No guarantees though.

There are also different color varieties that determine spell strength. Golden being the strongest.

While going through this Chapter I found mistakes which is a really good thing. I’ll probably ninja-edit them into the story. I’m also going to try and catch these up with the current chapter and bring them out the day after the Chapter comes out.

While it’s ideal that the TO comes out at the same time as the story I work on release days. Plus it’s adding even more writing to my plate.

I think that’s enough for this one. There’s a lot of information being thrown around today. I look forward to writing the next one and hope you have a wonderful day!

With love,
Katherine.

Talking Offerings Chapter 2

Hello out there,

Welcome to the second episode of Talking Offerings!

Chapter 2.

I started writing chapters that were something like four to ten thousand words and it was suggested that I make them much shorter to appease the palate of the Royal Road audience.

If you want an example, have a look at my Walkers Path story on Wattpad. You can see that the chapters are much longer there. A bit of a warning it’s an LGBTQ+-style story and I know not everyone likes reading that type of teen drama.

When writing this chapter I still hadn’t cut them into 2k word pieces yet. Chapter one and chapter two were a single chapter.

Now on to the meat and potatoes. This chapter is all about Inethiel meeting Molly.

Molly is beloved in my writers’ group. Partially because of my voice acting when reading my story.

If you don’t know already I’m a pantser and my mind spits this stuff out logically based on where it should go next. I had zero plans for Molly.

She’s a character that I would find really spooky if I were in a game like Dark Offerings. Just like the twins in The Shining or any scary movie where kids are involved.

Inethiel doesn’t trust Molly but finds that their personalities mesh well so she takes a chance and befriends her.

Inethiel is so comfortable, in fact, that she uses her Control undead ability near Molly causing unforeseen consequences.

Molly does have a past and I have plans for her down the line. However, I’m not sure where it’ll fit in the story just yet.

As for the player-controlled shambler, I wanted to hint at what was to come.

I’m writing this episode of TO the week chapter 19 will be released so you will soon know what the foreshadowing was for. (Tomorrow!)

Normally, the Forest is empty but the anticipation for the patch has really drummed up new and old players and in chapter three you’ll get to see what I mean.

As for Inethiel’s experience with the shambler fighting the elf. I’m going to be tight-lipped about this part.

This one is a little shorter than I would have liked but I hope you enjoyed it!

Talking Offerings Chapter 1

Hello out there,

Welcome to the first episode of Talking Offerings! Talking Offerings is a deeper insight into the story Dark Offerings that I publish every week.

If you don’t currently read the story feel free to use this link and read it! It’s free.

Chapter 1.

The first chapter is always a hard one for writers and this one was that way for me. I rewrote it probably four times. I don’t mean I edited it four times, I mean I completely re-wrote it.

If you didn’t know, my first attempt wasn’t even in the game. It was at Azerail’s school. Honestly, it was probably one of the most boring things that I’ve ever written.

It contained a huge information drop. I’m glad I wrote it though because it helped me organize what the story was going to be about.

Kos Play and I tend to talk a lot on discord and one night I ended up brainstorming with him about the story. It was late and about twenty minutes after our conversation I got an idea about how to reopen the story.

My second attempt was what you see today. Mostly. I spent probably two hours writing on my phone in bed attempting to get all of the information out of my head.

To be honest it felt like a moment of brilliance.

The huge difference is that Inethiel ended up leaving the game right away instead of continuing to play.

Three almost four chapters followed that story and while I liked what I wrote it wasn’t as interesting as keeping Azerail in the game.

Azerail ended up going to her mom’s birthday party in New York. They took a maglev train where she had a video conversation with Darryl. Then I did a nice description of a futuristic New York.

The best part about this rendition is I got to read it to Kos and he loved it.

The third chapter in the second attempt ended up being the next day when Azerail played again. I ended up merging that chapter with chapter 1 and that’s what you see today.

If it sounds confusing it’s because it was.

That’s it for today’s Talking Offerings. A bit of a warning. I may be writing a lot of these coming up so that I can catch up with the story.

As always, Enjoy!

Chapter 18 is out!

Hello out there,

Not only is the new chapter out, but it also has a new cover.

Here’s the chapter!

Some tell me she doesn’t look much like a zombie. Then I’ve had people say iZombie didn’t look like much of a zombie either. I could still make some tweaks, like, glossed-over eyes, a different hair color, or other injuries.

The new cover is at the top of the blog post! Please do let me know what your think of it.

Either way, I love how it looks and I hope you enjoy the chapter!

DO Chapter 17 has released!

Hello out there,

It’s Friday and it’s time for another chapter.

Here it is!

I had to edit this one right up until I scheduled it this morning. Explaining the transformation was difficult. It was in my mind but I had trouble getting it out.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy it.

Dark Offerings Chapter 15 is out!

Hello out there,

Time for more of Azerails story. She’s not as bad IRL as she is in the game but she is still a take-no-crap type of person.

You can read it here!

I’m working on a new thing called “Talking Offering” which is similar to “Writing Walker’s Path” and I’m about halfway done with chapter one. Going to try and do one for each of the chapters and add them to the description on Royal Road.

Hope you enjoy this week’s chapter!

Chapter 14 is out!

Hello out there,

That’s right the next chapter has been released!

Check it out here!

All I’ve been posting are chapter updates and it doesn’t feel right. I’m going to find something to blog about so it doesn’t feel like I’m just a bot.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this one.
