Writing Walker’s Path Chapter 14

Hello out there,

My name is Katherine Phillips and I’m the writer of the Walker’s Path web serial. This is my take on the latest release of Walker’s Path. It will be laden with spoilers so make sure to check out the new chapter before reading this!

A little bit of a warning. This Chapter has a sexual assault happen in it. I’ll be talking about this subject and if you have any problems with it you might not want to read todays episode.

That being said, I hope you’re all doing well.

Walker as you know was kissed by Jesse and to be honest I didn’t know this was how the story was going to go. In fact I’d planned for the encounter to be Jesse giving Walker his number.

Then, subconsciously, my mind went to the song by Sublime called “Date Rape.” If you don’t know the song it’s pretty much a story about a great looking guy who rapes women. As the song progresses the woman eventually gets justice. I didn’t realize that the song was actually influencing my writing until I edited it.

Walker experienced something very serious that a lot of people actually tend to brush off. Kissing or touching another person without their permission is Sexual Assault.

I actually made it a point to make Walker partially enjoy the experience because that’s how it can happen. You can get lost in the moment when someone is good looking but that doesn’t give the the right to do what ever they want.

Unfortunately, I had something similar happen to me. I was at a friends house and her neighbor came over. While my friend left the room the neighbor grabbed my chest. I was mortified. He wasn’t exactly good looking in my case but I was disturbed. In fact, he was a family friend. Luckily, my family understood and he is no longer allowed on our premises.

You can probably understand why this chapter is very personal to me based on these circumstances.

What I think is interesting is how Walker reacts to Joy. Walker doesn’t even see the kiss as a sexual thing. He is too disturbed that a guy had kissed him. I realize that I will have to make Walker deal with it at one point or another.

This rejection of what happened to him is what led to him creating a Kennedi character. It’s his mind splitting up the bad thing that happened to him. If he wasn’t the one it happened to he doesn’t need to worry about it, right?

Those two worlds the Walker and the Kennedi will eventually collide and it won’t be pretty. That part will be quite a bit down the line though.

The Walker and Joy meeting during Drama class was actually a happy accident. It gave me a believable shared backstory. Plus it’ll be fun to actually write some Drama class scenes. It might actually be fun to make Walker play a female part in a play when someone can’t make it.

As for the scene with Joy’s mom. It would have been highly irresponsible if she didn’t say anything so that’s how the bathroom scene with her was born.

Before you ask. Yes, the ice creams were a representation of the characters. Walker’s Banana Split, is obvious. Gina’s girly Strawberry fruit, Lacy’s Rocky Road, and Sam’s Vanilla.

What do you think Alyx’s flavor would be if she were there? Leave a comment and let me know!

I liked how Joy was apprehensive about the whole Kennedi character creation until Walker invited her to make it with him. I’m going to have some fun with that one in the future. Lets just say that they won’t see eye to eye on all of Kennedi’s traits.

I was tempted to remove the religious bit but tried to use it as an opportunity to give walker more backstory. Losing someone is hard, especially if they are close to you. In this case it changed the Walker family immensely. (Yes, Walker is their family name, remember?)

I actually have a few family members that don’t like their cars being touched like what happened in the story. I mentioned that Walker didn’t want to go “cruising” with his uncle because it was boring. My uncle is who this experience was modeled after. However, the main difference is that I absolutely loved hanging out with my uncle. I don’t think I ever declined to ride around with him.

That’s it for today’s episode of Writing Walker’s Path. As always, if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and ask away!

If you are struggling please talk with someone. Be it a therapist or a friend you can trust. We deserve better ladies.

Lots of love,
Katherine
