Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling

Hello out there,

After having written my first book, I feel I can finally talk about this.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been horrible at spelling. Even simple things like, your or you’re, perplexed me for the longest time. I wasn’t paying attention or I didn’t really care. I could get across what I wanted with the bare minimum.

Luckily we have programs that will tell us or even automatically fix our spelling for us. It’s saved me countless times.

Is it a crutch though? Yeah, but I think it’s okay to use a crutch sometimes.

My greatest weakness, is Grammar.

You should have seen how I was writing back in January of last year when I first decided I was going to write a book.

You couldn’t make out who was saying what in the dialog. I wasn’t putting the quotes in the right place even though I’ve read multiple books. It was a complete mess.

After showing it to people, they pointed out the parts that didn’t make sense and immediately I opened my favorite book and checked. They were right.

From then on I went back and fourth between books following the example of others writing. It worked really well for me.

Over time as I showed my manuscript to more and more people, the leader of our local writers critique group decided to help me with editing.

We worked endlessly, going line by line. We would send notes back and fourth, as I asked why certain things needed to be a certain way. When we were finished, I felt as if I finally started to “get” grammar.

I still struggle every day with where to put comma’s. There’s so many little rules and places I don’t fully understand. I’ve watched videos of people using language like “conjunction” or “predicate” and it never seems to help.

I’m sure I’ll figure it out one of these days. I’ll eventually find someone who can explain it in a way I understand. But for now I’ll continue using Grammarly and having my friends help me through it.

The best part about all of this is seeing your work come to life. There is also the side effect of actually giving your editor a break and being able to clearly put your vision on paper/screen.

This has actually been disrupting my willingness to apply for writing jobs. I’m gonna screw everything up. Then I imagine their editor shooting virtual laser beams at me destroying any semblance of courage I had. It’s silly but it’s a fear.

How are you all with Grammar, punctuation and spelling?

Thanks for dropping by again! I hope you didn’t come here looking for some sort of insight in how all this works. I’m still figuring it all out myself.

Have a wonderful day,
Katherine

Competitive Gaming

Hello out there,

My delve into competitive gaming has been less than successful. I didn’t dedicate myself to a single game so I never got really good at any of them. In general, I’m an okay player but I need variety in my life.

I am competitive in nature though and don’t like losing. I’ve lost friends and viewers who were great people because I tend to snap when I play them.

The second I lost a friend from playing competitive gaming I quit. I learned what I think was a valuable lesson that day. Let games be games and if you’re not having fun playing them swap to something that doesn’t get you angry.

So now I play Minecraft, and other survival games where I can only blame myself if I fail.

I’m not against competitive gaming in the least! I understand that my experience is not the same as others and that some people can handle the pressure.

Truthfully I haven’t been watching competitions lately. I used to watch League of Legends matches and they were super exciting! Come to think of it I don’t think I ever got mad when playing League.

What has been your experience with competitive gaming? Do you get angry like I do when you lose?

There’s a bright future for e-sports in fact League of Legends last year had an average of 21 million viewers per minute.

The finals were broadcast in 16 languages and across more than 20 platforms, and in the weeks since the match, we’ve been carefully analyzing viewership from around the world. After collecting, validating, and standardizing the data, we are excited to share that the World Championship Finals reached a record breaking 21.8 million Average Minute Audience (AMA).

Source.

It’s amazing how many people are into e-sports. When I was growing up I wished there was something like this. In fact the old movie “The Wizard” helped bring out my competitive nature. Was it a great movie? Not really, it was pretty much a huge advertisement for Super Mario Brothers 3. I wanted the game right as it came out so their advertisements worked.

When Street Fighter II Turbo came out for the Super Nintendo I played that game non-stop. There were few people that could consistently beat me in my friend group and it made me feel powerful.

In the future I plan on watching more of the tournaments out there.

Are you interested in watching e-sports?

Have a great day and I hope all your gaming dreams come true!

How A.I. can be used to take MMOs to the next level

Hello out there,

I absolutely love the idea of Artificial Intelegence improving in games.

Right now A.I. implementation in games is in its infancy. NPCs, which are A.I. controlled characters, are not as smart as they could be.

I can’t wait for them to get smarter. Imagine a world filled with smart NPCs that remember you and your actions. Remember the games “Shadow of Mordor” and “Shadow of War”? The orcs remembered you and what you did to them. We need more of that!

Imagine if NPCs were even smarter, they would be able to pass information between players and other NPCs. The game itself could be an A.I. which would be smarter than the others combined. It could truly make dynamic quests.

What sparked this idea is Guild Wars 2 back when it first came out. They talked about “Dynamic Quests” and it sparked the idea for an actual dynamic experience. Guild Wars 2 dynamic quests were a good idea but the implementation was less than enjoyable. Sure I enjoyed listening to the voiced content and figuring out what triggered the event to happen. Other than that though they were usually pretty simplistic and boring. That’s not exactly the worst thing though. At least the quests have fail states.

Most quests in MMO’s before GW2 didn’t have fail states. Usually if you die you just start over or run to the end real quick and fight the boss again.

Most new games coming out have implemented lots of things from Guild Wars 2 actually. The fields on the ground warning you get out of the way were also in Guild Wars 2 first. More movement in combat. Dodging. Anyways this isn’t about GW2.

A.I. won’t only affect the quests you get it’ll also change how we interact with NPCs. Imagine actually being able to kill NPCs and they stay dead. The person who killed the NPC if seen would likely get a bounty on their head or something like that. Suddenly there’s a new set of skills where people or NPCs could be detectives. Maybe there was a magical scrying orb around recording what happened. You’ll have dozens of players examining the footage and trying to catch the killer. Maybe the killer had a disguise on so that people would think it was a certain person.

It’s a whole new dynamic all inspired by smarter A.I. in a game!

That big A.I. controlling the world could be helping the players or blocking them based on the narrative it wants the players to experience. That A.I. would likely be able to work with every single human playing simultaneously making sure everyone is enjoying themselves based on what they feel is fun.

The implications and possibilities are endless! Imagine if you wanted to be the bad guy and the game keeps pushing you in that direction and presenting opportunities to you. Maybe you take the opportunity and suddenly you have evil armies at your disposal. You character starts to change and become more deranged.

How would you play when the consequences for every action you make is being watched and affecting how the A.I. directs your game play? Imagine the experiences you might have!

I think this is what is wrong with MMORPG’s of today. They aren’t advancing! It’s like they stopped trying to improve the experience.

A few years back the developers of Everquest tried to do something new and unique but ran into problems. There were some pretty ambitious ideas they had for Everquest Next. It was sad to see them fail.

Another ambitious company was Soulbound Studios and their game Chronicles of Elyria.

One company is trying to push the limits of what an MMO can be. The game everyone loves to hate “Star Citizen.” I mean seriously take a look at what they have done over there it’s impressive.

Amazon has the upper-hand here. They have a half way decent A.I. and are now developing their own MMORPG called “New World.” Truthfully I haven’t had much time to check out their game and what they want to implement but I will be after this.

I think if businesses like Google and Amazon who are creating A.I. need to start thinking ahead or the MMORPG genre will die.

Anyways I hope you enjoyed my rambling today. If you have any ideas you think can help add to the discussion please post below!

On the Roof Excerpt

Hello out there,

Yesterday I talked about my book Adrian and how I pulled a ton of my life experiences and stuffed them into the story.

What I didn’t tell you about was the real life stories I wrote. They are labeled as “Self Series” in my google drive.

This story in particular is from 1992. It’s named, “On the Roof” and is the day before the Landers California 7.3 magnitude earthquake. I lived in San Bernardino at the time, and it is one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever had.

This is the opening scene. I would hang out on the roof listening to the radio for hours on end recording the songs I loved the most. Norton Air force base was only a few miles away and planes would drift overhead every hour or so.

This scene kind of reminded me of the movie “Friday” where the whole movie is based in Ice Cubes house and front porch.

Enjoy!

Rrrirrrrrrirrr went the tape player. I let go of the rewind button and hit play. Nirvana’s ‘Come as you are’ came on mid-song.

“Nope,” I said.

I slammed the stop button, rewound it, and played the tape. The end of House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ ended and the Nirvana song cut in a few verses too late. I stopped it again and rewound the tape for a few seconds and pressed play. As ‘Jump Around’ ended, I stopped it. I flipped the dial back over to FM and music flew through the air.

I laid down on the roof next to my boombox for who knows how long, listening to the radio. I lazily watched as the airplanes flew above me. We lived pretty close to a military base and all kinds of planes flew overhead. Song after song played, most of which I’d already recorded, the ones that I liked at least.

I don’t know why they did it, but when a popular song came on, the DJ would always announce it. It was a good thing, but sometimes a bad thing. It was good when they started the song right after they introduced it. However, when they would start the song in the background and then talk over it, I recorded the whole song without the DJ in it. Getting the DJ in the recording always bugged me, so I would wait for another opportunity. I had nothing better to do. Summer break was the best.

I turned around on my stomach and crawled to the apex of the roof and peeked over the top. There was a huge military tent propped up in the backyard. I let out a deep sigh, scooted back down next to my radio and laid on my side.

We had family friends living with us, and I had to be careful about lounging on the roof. Joe, the dad of that family,  was pretty militaristic and didn’t like us doing things like sitting up here. I’d been coming up here for a long time and with them moving in, I had to be careful.

“Pssst,” I heard someone say.

I scooted down the roof and saw my ten-year-old brother Nate, which was short for Nathan, down by the gate.

“What?” I whisper-yelled.

“Can I come up there with you?” he asked.

I shook my head, I hated when he came up here with me. I just wanted to be alone.

I heard the radio jockey, “..and now Nirvan—” I rushed over to the radio and hovered my fingers over the record and play buttons. As soon as he finished, I pushed down on the buttons as the song came on. I mouthed a mute “Yes!” and pumped my arm up and down.

“Hey,” my brother said from behind me.

I looked at him, put my finger to my lips, got up and bent over, creeping out of the tape recorders range. About half-way there, I turned and waved for my brother to come with me. He wasn’t careful at all, just walked right over to me. I facepalmed and shook my head.

Luckily, he didn’t fall on the way over. I sat down and he did too.

“What’s up Henry?” he said.

“Taping songs, what about you?”

“Bored.” He was always bored, and somehow, it always became my problem.

“Where’re your friends?” I examined the area, he always had his little friends around somewhere.

“I dunno.” He turned and looked at the edge of the roof when he said it.

“Well, why don’t you call them and do something,” I suggested. Anything to get him out of my hair.

He didn’t answer me but he stood up and walked over to the edge of the roof.

“Careful!” I warned him.

“How much you wanna bet I can jump down there?”

I didn’t want him to jump down there. Heck, I didn’t want to jump down there. Our house was only one story tall, but a ten-foot drop was more than I wanted to jump. I got up and walked over next to him. I scooted forward carefully and looked over the edge to confirm the distance. The front lawn was just beyond a small cement path below. He could probably easily clear it, but I wasn’t comfortable with the distance.

“Naa you shouldn’t do it,” I said.

“What, you don’t think I can?” he quipped and scooted forward ready to jump.

“Don’t mess around, Nate.”

“I’ll do it.”

I grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him away from the edge and said, “Stop fuckin’ around.”

“Leggo,” he said as he broke from my grip. When he fully recovered, we briefly made eye contact, he took a step forward and launched himself off the roof.

My heart stopped and everything seemed to pause. I turned to grab him, but I was way too late. I rushed over to the edge and saw my brother crumpled up on the ground.

Shit.

I rushed over to the gate, lowered my feet down onto it, balancing and turning to the lawn and jumped down. I looked to where my brother fell and he wasn’t there. I was confused. I walked from the side of the house to the front. My brother and three of his friends were there. As I came into view, they burst into laughter.

“You should see your face!” my brother shouted.

“You little shits!” I said and stomped my left foot on the ground like I was going to chase them.

They scattered like roaches. I felt powerful and pissed at the same time. I inhaled deeply, closed my eyes, and then remembered the radio on the roof.

My brother and his friends were self proclaimed “Bad-asses” of the neighborhood. My brother in particular then and now has a sort of charisma that draws people in. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t fully utilize technology to harness his gift.

I hope you enjoyed this little excerpt from my self series. If you like it, let me know and I’ll bring more of the story forward so you can have another look.

Thanks,
Katherine

Adrian’s Journey

Hello out there,

I wanted to talk a little about Adrian, the book I wrote. It’s currently being edited and I talked a little about that in the First Adrian Excerpt.

Lets start at the beginning. In October of 2018 I found a lump on my right breast. I was extremely scared and made a doctors appointment immediately. I did this without telling anyone about it.

They signed me up to get some tests done. A mammogram and a biopsy. I made an appointment but it was two months away. For all of November and December I was freaking out.

Luckily it didn’t seem to be growing. My doctor also had me get blood tests and I was seeing him around once a month.

Around that time I started re-reading this really great online serial. Its name is The Saga of Tuck. It’s about a boy in 1997, that as a joke his girlfriend dresses him up like a girl. He ends up fooling everyone. It’s a really great story and I’ll leave a link to it here.

I read the whole thing while I was waiting for the appointment. Around January 1st after I finally got the tests done I started panicking and entered a deep depression. To save my sanity, I decided to throw myself into a project.

That’s when I started writing Adrian.

At first I started the book as if it were my life, however, with the best possible outcome for being a trans person. I felt as if I were dying and needed to get my story out. So much of the book is crammed with experiences from my life.

Around march of 2019 I told my parents about what I’d found and that I was waiting for biopsy results. They were very supportive and tried to make me feel comfortable.

Around mid March my mom and I went in to get the results. They told us it was benign.

It was a huge weight off of my shoulders. However, it didn’t diminish my depressed state. I had survivor’s guilt.

As time passed I learned how to use my emotions and put them into my work. I started feeling better and then my grandmother died. I used my new emotion redirection skills and put them into the book.

Then I finished it on June 9th. I was in the middle of editing it with my good friend Leila from a writers group when my cat died.

I had a hard time writing after that. I wrote a few screenplays and recorded them with our film group. (Which you can read more about here.). They were small, 1 to 2 pages long, and didn’t really feel like an accomplishment.

Getting out of the house to film them was really good for me. Filming introduced me to some really nice people.

By the end of the year I thought that 2020 could never be as bad as 2019.

I was wrong obviously. Between the protests, the pandemic, being stuck in the house when I had just found new friends, was all pretty devastating. I dealt with it by writing. I started around 3 new projects, one of them being a sequel to the first book.

Now Adrian is being edited and I’m trying to be patient. I want to tear into it and fix it so I can sent it out to an agent or self publish it.

The sequel is around half way finished at 40 thousand words. I’m optimistic about the future and am excited to see these works to completion.

Thank you for reading my story about Adrian,
Katherine

Writing Dragons Mane

Hello out there,

I recently moved rooms, as I was going through my things, and found a story that I wrote when I was a teenager.

It’s a coming of age story about a young kid and his friend. I recently started transferring the story over to a google doc. I found it really interesting.

When I was young I showed this paper to my mother but she never liked reading. She ended up criticizing the story. I only wanted to hear positive things about my work and because of the criticism I stopped writing. It was a childish thing to do but I was a child so go figure.

I wanted to show you a little bit of the story. I’ve only done formatting and didn’t fix any of the other errors.

Enjoy!

Sleep came long and hard that night. When Lance woke up his eyes were aching from the restless night. They felt like bricks.

The first thing that he saw was a great mountain. He thought he was going crazy because he was seeing it from above. *What the, what’s that?* He thought.

A big dragon in which he only heard about in legends was carrying him. The dragon flew down to the mountain but it didn’t stop, it kept going and going. It was supposed to move but Lance didn’t know how to turn it. Going faster and faster the dragon flew towards the mountain.

It didn’t stop Lance tried and tried to stop the dragon it didn’t stop. Suddenly he thought *Stop! Stop!* The dragon stopped in mid flight. It just sat there flapping its wings. They were about 30 feet from the ground.

Lance said “Go down to the ground.”

It didn’t move.

He didn’t get why it wouldn’t go down. *I’ll just jump down.* Lance thought.

Suddenly the dragon started flying down to the ground. Lance didn’t even notice it land. Besides the ground coming closer.

Lance tried to get down off the dragon when they were on the ground but he couldn’t move. When he looked at his legs he got scared, there was nothing holding him on the dragon but he couldn’t move.

With a big roaring voice the dragon spoke. “Please master, don’t jump down.”

Lance was surprised and confused at the same time. The big gray mass of a dragon was just sitting there with him on his back. His long neck stretched toward him. He could remember the stories told. Dragons could listen to your thoughts. Dragons could eat you in one gulp. It was even said that dragons could breathe fire, ice, and even acid.

He started to put things together and thought, *Those things can breath fire and it’s bringing its head around to me.*

The voice of the dragon came as a thunderous boom, “I will not harm you.”

“I thought all dragons didn’t like us humans.” Lance said.

The dragon didn’t say anything.Lance paused and thought a minute. *He’s lying, he going to eat me.*

Another thought fogin to him came. *I will not harm you. I can both speak in your tongue and your thoughts but I cannot hear your words. I can only speak them.*

Lance thinks, *Will you let me down?*

The dragon replies If you get off my back I will not see you for another year.

Lance thinks, *Okay this is farewell then for a time.*

*Yes goodbye.* came a reply.

Lance steps down or rather jumps off the dragon.

Lance jerks up out of his bed sweating. He wipes off the sweat and sits up in the morning sun. *That was some dream.* he thought.

There’s a ton of mistakes in this but I think it’s really awesome to see how far I’ve come. It’s interesting to see something I wrote while I was so young. Until 2016 it was the biggest story I’d ever written.

When I’m done transferring it over I’ll make it available for anyone to check out. I may even polish it up some.

Anyways, thank you for dropping by again!

My Love Affair With Guild Wars 2

Hello out there,

I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 since beta. It’s changed so much in the last couple years.

If you don’t know what GW2 is it’s a MMORPG which is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. The base game is free so anyone can check the game out right now.

I’ve played MMO’s for a really long time. Since back in the 90’s. I talk a bit more about that if you’re interested, in this blog post. I talk about the future of MMORPG’s and the tech running them.

But for today the subject is GW2.

Summit1g a popular streamer on Twitch has started streaming the game and it’s risen in popularity so I wanted to talk about the game and what I love about it.

In particular, GW2 has a lot of exploring and a more upbeat combat style. There’s dodging and quick combat skills. It’s pretty fun.

If you don’t know what an MMORPG is then here’s an explanation. An MMORPG is a type game that usually has you make a character that you build up over time. You gather equipment and weapons. A lot of the time there will be resource gathering. Generally, resource gathering is used to craft items.

I’m not the biggest fan of crafting but Guild Wars 2 makes it a pleasurable experience.

When GW2 came out, the story was okay but over the years they’ve learned from their mistakes and have improved a lot. Now I look forward to the new content.

Speaking of new content because of the CoronaVirus the GW2 team has not been able to record voice acting for their game. The game is pretty popular for its voice acting. They even give your character a voice.

My favorite part about the game is exploration. They have so many wonderful places you can go. The views you can see are breathtaking. They have a system called vista’s where it will showcase an area. I look forward to those and watch every one of them.

There’s also points of interest that you need to find for map completion. Often those points of interest have interesting environments.

They have not only learned how to make the stories better but their content has improved a lot as well.

The first big change I want to talk about is the mastery system. This allows you to progress your character beyond level 80. Instead of power increases, you get small utility skills or unlock mount skills.

My favorite content addition is the mount system. I love how you sometimes have to earn a mount. They will ask you to do a large quest chain where you need to go all over several maps and collect parts.

When they first introduced mounts, you acquired them from an NPC in a sanctuary. They would have mounts scattered around the area and you would use them to collect certain items so that you could unlock them. It was really simple, unlike the new mounts which pose more of a challenge.

GW2’s mounts movement is unique. Each mount adds a certain style of movement. There’s a giant rabbit mount that will jump vertically. There’s a Raptor mount that will jump forward and several other mounts that do other unique movements like floating over water, small teleports, gliding, and even flying.

Each mount has its own use and unlockable abilities. It’s extremely cool and I hope more games do it in the future.

The movement is so freeing and there are so many options. It’s hands down the best mount system created.

This is a small dive about what I like about the game. There are other things like Fractals which are mini-dungeons or Raids which are big boss fights. I don’t usually play them but I don’t have the armor for stuff like that.

There are also regular dungeons but people didn’t really like the aesthetics of them so they aren’t that popular.

If you’re interested in the game go to GuildWars2.com and check it out!

Thanks for reading along,
Katherine

A Rairy Excerpt

Hello out there,

I decided to introduce you to a new story. Its in my books section but isn’t a book. It’s a web serial that I’ve been writing.

It’s an intense, very sad story about a transgender 16 year old. Alongside Rairy’s tale, I’m adding tidbits of her as a kid. It’s an integral part of the story. She had a very difficult childhood but somehow came out a decent person.

Below is the very beginning of the story. There’s a couple of cliches in there so I apologize for that.

Mom was sleeping on her bed. I placed my feet slowly one in front of the other, glancing at her as I crept forward. When I finally reached my destination, I let out a sigh of relief. I quietly opened her jewelry box, revealing a mirror and my face. I started digging through the case, looking for my favorite earrings, a smile spread across my lips as I found them.

I lifted them to my ears while staring at myself in the case’s little mirror. I imagined that my hair was long and styled like Becky’s at school, instead of this ugly boy hair I had. I slipped out of my illusion and stared at my hair. I hated my short hair.

I heard the movement before I could see it. I reflexively ducked and after a moment or two when I didn’t hear any more sound, I slowly stood back up. As I rose I glanced at the bed. Empty.

I turned around and Mom was standing behind me, looking down at me. She had a look of disappointment and fury on her face.

I saw her lips move as if in slow motion, “Raymond!” she shouted.

I quickly turned around, put the earrings back in the box, and closed it.

“YOU LITTLE SHIT!” she screamed this time as she grabbed me by the arm. “When are you going to learn to stop touching my things!?”

She dragged me out of her room, into the hall, and pulled me up close to her face, spitting as she spoke. “You wanna touch my things!?“ She threw me into my room from the hallway, I bounced a few times on my butt. I felt rugburns forming as my hands skidded on the carpet. “I’ll show you something of mine!” she yelled, slammed the door, and locked it from the outside.

I scrambled to my feet, ran up to the door, grabbed the doorknob, and twisted. It wouldn’t budge. I screamed at the door, “Mom!” I banged a few times. “LET ME OUT!” I slid down, following the frame of the door and curled up. I spoke softly this time. “I’m sorry. I promise I’ll never do it again.”

The door opened. pushing me into the corner. “Where are you, you little shit!?” I heard her say.

She took a step inside my room and closed the door, leaving the two of us alone in my bedroom. She turned around and saw me cowering in the corner. I saw what she went to get and it was all too familiar to me. She got the paddle.

“There you are!” she spat, grabbed me by my arm, and flung me onto my bed. “Assume the position!”

“Mom plea—”

She slapped down the paddle on the bed next to me and screamed, “ASSUME THE POSITION!”

Tears flooded my face as I slowly slid off the bed, turned around to face the bed again, and bent over.

“Pull them down!”

I pulled down my pants. Mom had drilled holes into the paddle so I could hear it before it hit me. It made getting spanked all the more painful. I don’t know if it was the anticipation or the whistle that scared me the most. The whistle started and the pai—

I woke up with a start and nearly falling out of my chair. Another goddamn nightmare. “Fuck!” I whispered.

I felt pressure on my right arm and my body suddenly shifted. My chair and face were now on the floor. I looked up and Howard was looking down at me from his desk next to mine with a smug look.

“Rairy, get off the floor!” Mr. Bumble shouted at me.

I hope you enjoyed it! If you’re interested and want to read more you can click this link or you can go to the books section and look at the blurb/photos.

Have a great day!

The past and future of MMOs

Hello out there,

MMOs are Massively Multiplayer Online games.

I’ve been playing them since I was around fifteen (1994). I started out playing MUDs which were MMOs but instead of graphics, they used words.

In a MUD you used your imagination rather than seeing a visual representation. MUDs being my first experience in the MMO scene has skewed my idea of what a good MMO can be. Most MUDs require you to type in ‘attack’ and then the name of the creature or player you want to attack. This functionality is pretty much the same thing that is happening in today’s MMORPGs. Just instead of typing it in you tap a button. It’s pretty neat because I feel I was able to see the back end of how games work.

I’ve played a lot of the great MMOs out there from shooters to the top tier MMORPGs. MMOs are a personal favorite style of gaming for me. The feeling that there are other people out there playing while I’m playing is fantastic.

The ability to help another person from your computer chair or a couch is amazing.

I don’t think kids from this generation really appreciate what is happening. They take it for granted because it’s something that has always existed for them.

In my early years, the only video game interaction I got was in arcades standing next to a stranger that happened to like the Ninja Turtles four-player game as much as I did.

I know I’m showing my age in today’s post but I think that’s okay. I’m happy to have lived through video gaming history.

Right now there’s a few MMOs out there that utilize Virtual Reality. VR is the obvious next step in gaming. We have these amazing headsets but VR still has a way to go before it’s accessible for everyone.

A few years back I started a VR story abo—

There it is. This is just a big advertisement for a story you’re writing.

No, not really Brain. It’s just an example. Anyways don’t interrupt me.

A few years back I started a VR story about a woman and her husband where their consciousness is redirected into a game world.

Like, Sword Art Online?

Yes, like Sword Art Online.

So, you’re ripping off Sword Art Onl—

No, the ‘Living in a video game’ genre is pretty big and by no means was SAO the first to invent it.

I’m of the opinion that the next big step into gaming is a redirected consciousness style system. In fact, there are some people out there that think that real life is a big simulated game world. There’s some pretty compelling evidence in their arguments too.

When this sort of technology comes out and I suspect that it will eventually. We could be anyone or be anything. Imagine learning how to walk for the first time as an ant. Learning how to fly like a bird or swim like a fish or even swap genders.

Tech like this will enable the human race to share recorded experiences. Imagine being able to feel the feelings someone is having during an exciting moment. It’s like twitch for your life.

Imagine being able to feel someone’s suffering. It could change things overnight for equality and poverty.

Anyways I know I’m veering off subject a bit but the things to come are amazing and I can’t wait to see them come to pass.

I hope you liked this little dive into my thoughts on MMOs and where they are headed.

I hope you have a great day!

About Ghoul

Hello out there,

I’d like to talk about the story “Ghoul” I’m crafting. I’m only eight thousand words into the story and have been world-building as I go.

I figured I could stop and write out my ideas about the characters and the monsters in this book.

First is Noemi, she is the protagonist. She is a ghoul that eats a necromancer and absorbs its power. Her new necromancy powers take over and she begins the process of becoming human again. Noemi was born and raised in our time (the 2020s), died a quick death in a car accident (Huge chunk of metal in her head), and has been undead for over 200 years. She is still a ghoul but is prettied up by her new necromancy powers. That being said, she is stronger than an average human and quicker than one as well. She doesn’t remember dying and thinks it’s just another day. She’s also a half Mexican Texan.

There are Liam and Alben who accidentally captured Noemi in a bear trap. I haven’t decided what to do with them yet. I was thinking about potentially making Liam a love interest as he is around the same age as Noemi when she died.

Liam and Alben are the leaders of a sanctuary/safe-house. They are hiding from the vampires who took over the country.

Because Noemi is an over 200-year-old Ghoul, that makes the timeline 200 years in the future. Noemi doesn’t know this, obviously.

Wait, you just skipped over the Vampires thing!”

Right now…? You made that up right now?

Yes.

There’s also an undead creature called a Lich. They are undead that absorb energy through touch. These are pretty much undead necromancers. They are the key component to keeping humans at bay. They originally raised zombies for the Vampires to round up humans. They aren’t needed as much anymore but they are definitely still around. They are actually used to show what will happen if people try to escape. They drain the escapee humans and raise them back from the dead. They then keep them alive for a few days.

The environment. Highly technological cities everywhere are now abandoned ghost towns. Some machines that haven’t broken down yet are still cleaning and taking care of cities for absolutely no one.

That’s about all I want to share today. I know it’s a lot but it’s the framework I’ve built. I hope you enjoyed it!
