My Love Affair With Guild Wars 2

Hello out there,

I’ve been playing Guild Wars 2 since beta. It’s changed so much in the last couple years.

If you don’t know what GW2 is it’s a MMORPG which is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. The base game is free so anyone can check the game out right now.

I’ve played MMO’s for a really long time. Since back in the 90’s. I talk a bit more about that if you’re interested, in this blog post. I talk about the future of MMORPG’s and the tech running them.

But for today the subject is GW2.

Summit1g a popular streamer on Twitch has started streaming the game and it’s risen in popularity so I wanted to talk about the game and what I love about it.

In particular, GW2 has a lot of exploring and a more upbeat combat style. There’s dodging and quick combat skills. It’s pretty fun.

If you don’t know what an MMORPG is then here’s an explanation. An MMORPG is a type game that usually has you make a character that you build up over time. You gather equipment and weapons. A lot of the time there will be resource gathering. Generally, resource gathering is used to craft items.

I’m not the biggest fan of crafting but Guild Wars 2 makes it a pleasurable experience.

When GW2 came out, the story was okay but over the years they’ve learned from their mistakes and have improved a lot. Now I look forward to the new content.

Speaking of new content because of the CoronaVirus the GW2 team has not been able to record voice acting for their game. The game is pretty popular for its voice acting. They even give your character a voice.

My favorite part about the game is exploration. They have so many wonderful places you can go. The views you can see are breathtaking. They have a system called vista’s where it will showcase an area. I look forward to those and watch every one of them.

There’s also points of interest that you need to find for map completion. Often those points of interest have interesting environments.

They have not only learned how to make the stories better but their content has improved a lot as well.

The first big change I want to talk about is the mastery system. This allows you to progress your character beyond level 80. Instead of power increases, you get small utility skills or unlock mount skills.

My favorite content addition is the mount system. I love how you sometimes have to earn a mount. They will ask you to do a large quest chain where you need to go all over several maps and collect parts.

When they first introduced mounts, you acquired them from an NPC in a sanctuary. They would have mounts scattered around the area and you would use them to collect certain items so that you could unlock them. It was really simple, unlike the new mounts which pose more of a challenge.

GW2’s mounts movement is unique. Each mount adds a certain style of movement. There’s a giant rabbit mount that will jump vertically. There’s a Raptor mount that will jump forward and several other mounts that do other unique movements like floating over water, small teleports, gliding, and even flying.

Each mount has its own use and unlockable abilities. It’s extremely cool and I hope more games do it in the future.

The movement is so freeing and there are so many options. It’s hands down the best mount system created.

This is a small dive about what I like about the game. There are other things like Fractals which are mini-dungeons or Raids which are big boss fights. I don’t usually play them but I don’t have the armor for stuff like that.

There are also regular dungeons but people didn’t really like the aesthetics of them so they aren’t that popular.

If you’re interested in the game go to GuildWars2.com and check it out!

Thanks for reading along,
Katherine
