First Adrian Excerpt

Hello out there,

I have a treat for you today! Welcome to an Excerpt from my Slice of Life book Adrian! It’s currently being edited by “By the Hand Editing“. It is owned and operated by the amazing Author Angie Martin. It is a small team of five people so they can give you the attention you need. I’m happy to be working with them!

This is an excerpt from early on in the book. The main character used to have an eidetic memory and is suffering through its gradual fading. Adrian is 13 transgender and really into gaming.

Enjoy!

I looked back down at my phone just as iBallisticSquid repeatedly smashed the top of the roof of someone turtling. The guy eventually ran out of mats, Squid jumped inside his little bunker, spun around, and in a shot, I never could have made, blasted him with a shotgun. I loved Squid’s Fortnite videos.

My mom caught my attention. I looked up and saw her reaching for something on the top shelf of one of the cupboards. When she couldn’t reach it, she climbed up onto the counter, got on her knees, and grabbed a bowl.

I grinned and stared at her, trying to capture the moment in my head. A white gloss flashed over my vision, and the moment of my mother kneeling on the counter pulled forward from what I was seeing. It immediately faded.

I put a hand over my mouth and ran into the living room.

My knees shook in my arms as I pulled them closer to my chest and sobbed. No matter how many times I tried, I could capture moments anymore. It was like my brain refused to do it.

I snatched up one of the small pillows on the couch and chucked it across the room. It made me feel better, but not by much.

The fluffy feel of the towel on my hands as I dried them off made going to the bathroom a luxurious experience. I swung open the bathroom door and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I stopped and stared. The person in the reflection mirrored my actions; he ran his hands through his sandy-blonde curls and smiled, dimples forming as his face tightened. It was a hollow smile. We leaned forward, I looked into his green eyes and saw little flecks of amber.

I opened my mind to my imagination, and the boy in the mirror disappeared. He was replaced with a thin girl, her curly blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. She had on a silky red dress. One of her arms was held daintily to her side and the other one pressed to her chest. I could see her spinning around, making that red dress flare out. It reminded me of the dream I’d had yesterday.

The girl faded from the mirror and was replaced by the boy again. The smile we shared faded. I looked down at my T-shirt, lifted it, and stared at my stomach. Why am I so fat?

I turned away from the mirror and grabbed my stomach. There wasn’t much there, but I hated that I was able to grab it at all.

I slammed my fist on the counter while clutching my stomach with the other hand. YOU CAN LOSE THIS!

Tears ran down my face, and as I was about to wipe them away I noticed my mother in the doorway. I quickly pulled my shirt back down and dried my eyes.

Her face scrunched up and tears slowly spilled from her eyes. She spread her arms out, I walked to her and wrapped mine around her.

I had a feeling that this was going to be one of those days.
